Sharjah\n Art Foundation will launch FOCAL POINT \u2013 an annual art book publishing \nplatform \u2013 to be held on 8 – 10 November, 2018. The event seeks \nto present, engage, circulate, sell and distribute varied printed \nproducts with our audience in Sharjah, the wider United Arab Emirates \nand the Middle East. Very few platforms in the Middle East, and \nespecially the UAE, cater to the interdisciplinary nature of publishing \nand FOCAL POINT seeks to fill that gap. The aim is to present a broad \nperspective on art publishing, with a focus on independent and \nalternative publishing practices presented alongside a select number of \nthe larger, more established publishing houses. Participants have been \ninvited to work with a broad understanding of what it means to read, \nwrite, mediate, edit or publish printed matter under the capacious label\n of art.

FOCAL POINT will be multi-faceted: its main component \nwill be designed around a traditional fair layout where invited \npublishers will present their printed matter independently or within a \ncurated section. This will be accompanied by the programming component \nwhich will include a series of talks, performances, screenings and book \nlaunches that will both articulate and play with the dialogue around \nindependent publishing, and the people who make it happen. A \ncollaborative symposium, developed by Asia Art Archive (Hong Kong), will\n look towards the histories of publishing in the wider Asia region. Also\n presented onsite will be connected art projects and open studios, and a\n series of Education and Community workshops designed around the theme.

As\n the theme zeroes in on the small and independent, the events will be \nframed in a more intimate set-up, housed within the heritage building of\n Bait Al Shamsi. Originally a house built in 1845, its two levels and \ncourtyard space was renovated in the late 90s to allow artists to set up\n studios in the rooms, and the spaces to be used for exhibition \npurposes. The location has been used several times as a site of \nintervention in past Sharjah Biennials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chicago Art Book Fair began last year as an experiment in \nshowcasing emerging directions and diverse legacies within small press \narts publishing. The fair featured an international group of 125 arts \npublishers, small presses, book artists, comics artists, zinemakers and \nprintmakers, with satellite programming and after parties. To our \ndelight, our first effort made a splash with over 6,000 guests in \nattendance. In 2018, we look forward to bringing even more of Chicago’s \npeople together with another fantastic roster of artist vendors. The \nChicago Art Book Fair will once again convene at the historic Chicago Athletic Association<\/a>, at 12 S. Michigan Avenue<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Printed Matter\u2019s NY Art Book Fair (NYABF) is the leading international gathering for the distribution of artists\u2019 books, celebrating the full breadth of the art publishing community. Free and open to the public, the event draws more than 35,000 individuals including book lovers, collectors, artists, and art world professionals each year. In 2018, the NYABF will host 365 exhibitors from around the world featuring a wide variety of works \u2013 from zines and artists\u2019 books to antiquarian books and contemporary art editions. The NYABF offers countless opportunities to attend free programs including artist-led discussions, performances, interactive workshops, and curated exhibitions.

THE NY ART BOOK FAIR PREVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>Join us on Thursday, September 20 from 6\u20139 pm, at MoMA PS1 for the opening night preview. Preview tickets are $20, and include a limited edition work by artist Ryan Gander<\/strong>. The evening will feature special live performances by DJ Monchan<\/strong>, Roe Enney<\/strong>, and Odwalla1221<\/strong>, presented by Blank Forms<\/strong>. Preview ticket sales support Printed Matter\u2019s year-round work of providing resources to artists and championing the artists\u2019 book medium through programs including the NY and LA Art Book Fair.

The Fair weekend will once again feature a full calendar of\n free educational programming. The Classroom, an ongoing series of \nevents, serves as an informal space for talks, panel discussions, \nreadings, performances and other programs. The Contemporary Artists\u2019 \nBook Conference (CABC), organized by a national group of art library \nprofessionals, will present two full days of conversation at Book \nCulture (26-09 Jackson Ave), inviting artists, scholars and leading \nfigures to address a range of issues across publishing and art-book \nculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Problems Can Artist Publishers Solve?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We collaborated on a publication with PrintRoom. Together, we invited 16 artist publishers to respond to the question: “Thinking locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally: What are some social, political, economic and ecological problems that artist publishers are equipped to address or solve using their knowledge, skills, and resources?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art Work Newspaper \u2014 Publishing as an Artistic Toolbox: 1989\u20132017, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria, November 8 – January 28, 2018<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

What is the role of art publishing today? How have artists adapted modes of publishing as a tool for their practice? How has the notion of artists’ publishing activity changed, given the ever-increasing amount of fairs and an ever-evolving number of book-related collections in contemporary art museums? Publishing has developed a favorite site and medium for aesthetic and artistic experimentation. It has also become an alternative space for promoting unrestricted individual or collective discourse. The multi-part exhibition project Publishing as an Artistic Toolbox: 1989\u20132017 <\/em>explores the potentials of publishing \u2013 in the form of books, magazines, journals, artistic interventions, websites \u2013 as a particular medium and context both to circulate information, knowledge \u2013 and to produce art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of looking at the already historicized and analyzed period of the 1960s and 1970s, the exhibition will highlight how a recent generation of artists use publishing as a productive tool for their practice. The focus lies on the period from 1989 until 2017, taking 1989 as symbolic date to underline the shift from analogue to digital. On a political level, 1989 with the fall of the Berlin wall marks a significant date. On a social level, it is an important year as it indicates the invention of the World Wide Web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project, like a toolbox itself, is composed of different parts, sections, and components. Publishing as an Artistic Toolbox: 1989\u20132017 <\/em>opens up and unfolds through different propositions, partly by material exhibits on display, partly through the presentation of time-based events, as well as through an offsite project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
